We correct in the open
When a published story is wrong, we fix it and say so on the story itself. A correction
appears in a marked panel above the article body with the date, what was changed and who
made the change. We do not quietly edit a live story and leave no trace.
What counts as a correction
A factual error — a wrong name, record, date, result, or a claim that turned out not to
hold — gets a correction notice. Typos and formatting fixes do not; those are just fixed.
If a change alters what a reader would take away from the story, it gets a notice.
How to request one
Email [email protected] with the story
URL and what is wrong. Tell us what the correct information is and, if you can, how we can
verify it. We answer every request, including the ones we decline.
Machine-readable
Corrections are published in each story's structured data as well as on the page, so
aggregators and search surfaces carrying our headlines see the same record a reader does.
Removal
We do not unpublish stories because a subject dislikes them. We will remove or amend
material that is factually wrong, presents a genuine safety risk, or that we had no right
to publish in the first place.
